Saturday 10 February

Over a hundred people from  Ottawa’s diverse communities were at the Chinese Alliance Church hall on Eccles Street to participate in the 2018 Black History Month celebration hosted by the African Canadian Association of Ottawa (ACAO), under the leadership of its President, John Adeyefa. It was a very lively evening of social and professional networking, entertainment and the best of a variety of African food. Guest speaker and financial consultant Olive Wairimu gave a most inspiring presentation on strategies for managing personal finances and increase an individual’s net worth.  Sylmadel Coke of the Black Canadian Mental Health Collective, spoke about the challenges Black people suffering from mental illness in accessing needed services. Spoken Word artist Larry D’Mani gave a most uplifting performance. This was followed by the best of African drumming from Hamid Ayoub and Group, followed by Eric & Tumba na Rumba, which had the audience on their feet clapping and dancing and thoroughly enjoying themselves.  The highlight of the evening was the African fashion show featuring models and designs from Nigeria, Ghana, Burundi, Kenya, Cameroon and Somalia.
