Saturday 25 November

Over a hundred spectators were at the Woodroffe High School auditorium on Georgina Drive to watch: “An Immigrants Tale”, an enchanting and captivating story of a Somali immigrant and her search for higher education on arrival in Canada. Superbly written and directed by Habibat Ali, the story of Hawa Haji unfolds slowly from her frustration being at home while her doctor husband Mohammed puts in 16 hour shifts in the local hospital. When she informs him that she wishes to go back to school to get a degree, Mohammed does not appear interested, just like Hawa’s father had done in not accepting that girl were worthy of getting an education. Habibat Ali plays the lead role as Hawa but there outstanding performances from her nosy neighbour to her white school mates. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
