Over 200 people from Ottawa’s Who is who were at the Sheraton Hotel on Albert Street last night at a gala to mark the end of the 2020 Black History Month celebrations. Organised by Kelly and Yomi Pratt under the banner of the Global Community Alliance, this annual extravaganza has come to symbolize the very best of Ottawa’s Black community. Special awards were given to members of the city’s diverse population who had excelled in various aspects of volunteerism and philanthropy. Standouts from the awards were: cardiologist Dr Habibat Garuba (Professional Achievement award), Suzette Small-Weekes and Ketcia Peters (Community Builder awards). Among the VIPs present were Mayor Jim Watson and Provincial Liberal Party leader John Fraser, members of provincial parliament, city councillors, Police Chief Peter Sloly, as well as diplomats from various African and Caribbean countries.
