Children’s Stories in the Diaspora

by Sarah Onyango

On Sunday, February 8, 2015, excited children of all ages and races and their parents congregated in the Children’s Program Room  at the Ottawa Public Library’s Nepean Centrepointe Branch to enjoy the popular annual Children’s Stories in the Diaspora storytelling session. They listened to
readers from the black community share children’s stories written by black authors from the diaspora. These readers included: dancer/storyteller Kahmaria Pingue, Caribbean Fit Fete’s Tarrah Mauricette, three young ladies from the Ottawa Church of God youth group, Pascale Newry (Under the Mango Tree), CHUO’s Denise Isaacs, and Harvey Brown, the first male reader in the event’s 13-year history. Sankofa, a local bookseller, was also at the event with various books for sale. All are welcome to attend this family event. Black History Ottawa partners with  the Ottawa Public Library to present this event in order to promote reading and literacy as well as library use.
