Ghanaians in the national capital region hosted their friends and families at Brewer Park, off Bronson Road, at the 2017 version of the annual GhanaFest  event.  Amidst a background of blaring Ghanaian highlife and funk music, young and no-so-young crowded around the the food vendors for a taste of their favorite foods; this reporter has a partial liking for fried plantain. The highlight of the bright sunny day was the resumption of the soccer rivalry between the host nation’s Black Stars and Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Unfortunately we are unable to bring you the final score as this reporter, who happens to be Nigerian, left at half time, with the Black Stars leading 1-0. Inquiries after the fact reveled that the Nigeria’s Super Eagles Ottawa came from behind to beat their hosts 4-3. The Black Stars featured the only girl on the field, Melissa Baynes who said she had been playing soccer with boys since age eight. She was one of the bright lights of the afternoon with her deft touch and silky dribbling skills.
