Jamaican High Commission hosts 60th anniversary reception

Some 100 guests were at the Lantern Room of the National Arts Centre on Elgin Street to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence. The event was hosted by the country’s High Commissioner to Canada Her Excellency Sharon Miller, with singer/entertainer Steve Higgins as MC. Honoured guests included Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson; Parliamentary Secretary to the Canadian Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, M.P. Maninda Sidhu; Consul-General of Jamaica, Lincoln Downer; member of of Canadian Federal Parliament, Michael Couteau; Robert Smith of Sandals Agency; OCDSB Director of Education, Camille Williams-Taylor; Ottawa City Councillor, Rawlson King; Embassy of Haiti Deputy Chief of Mission, Nesly Numa; Dominican Republic Ambassador Her Excellency Michelle Cohen; Senator Rosemary Moodie; St. Kitts & Nevis High Commissioner to Canada, Her Excellency Sherry Cross; Kuwaiti Ambassador to Canada, Her Excellency Reem Alkhaled; Black History Ottawa President, June Girvan, and Jamaican Ottawa Community Association President, Jennifer Denis.
