Over 200 Nigerians and their friends attended a gala at the Jim Durrell Centre on Walkley Road in celebration Nigeria’s 59th Independence Day anniversary. Hosted by the Nigerian Canadian Association Ottawa (NCAO) under the leadership of President Chuks Imiaghagbe, it was evening filled with music, exotic Nigerian food, entertainment and good comradeship. NCAO also used the occasion to give special awards to those Nigerians who had excelled in community volunteerism and philanthropy, as well as students with outstanding academic achievements.

Below is a list of award winners.

Pius Adesanmi : Excellence in Leadership (Posthumous award); Yomi Pratt: Community Builder award; Bernedette Ojiaku: Outstanding Mentorship award; Emmanuel Okoh: Outstanding Volunteer award; Godwin Ifedi: Distinguished Community Partner award; John Peter Osuagwu: Outstanding Business Partner award; Kika Otiono: Outstanding Educational Achievement award; Lily Akagbosu: Outstanding Educational Achievement award.
