Nigerians with families and friends celebrated the 58th anniversary of their country’s independence with a number of social events in the national capital.  The program commenced  with  National Day of Prayer, presided over by Rev. Cornelius Babalola, on Saturday 29 September at the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre on Walkley Road.  On Monday  October 1, there was a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, organised by the Nigeria High Commission, attended by Mayor Jim Watson.  This was followed by a reception, hosted by the High Commissioner, Ambassador Asekun, at the Weston Hotel on Colonel By Drive, with senior Canadian officials, members of the diplomatic corps and other dignitaries in attendance. Another reception was held on Tuesday at the Nigeria High Commission on Metcalfe Street.  The celebrations were then rounded off with a gala on Saturday 6th October, organised  by the Nigerian-Canadian Association of Ottawa at the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre .
