Forensic psychiatrist Dr. A.G.Ahmed was far from his Ottawa home base on Saturday 11 February, when he was the keynote speaker at a mental health seminar, hosted in the city of Iqaluit by the Nunavut Black History Society, in association with the City of Iqaluit and the Government of Nunavut. The theme was : “Mental Health and Resilience in Indigenous and Minority Populations” and .included an excellent documentary film, “Not Criminally Responsible”.

Among those present were the Honorable George Hickes, who opened the event, Iqaluit Mayor Madeleine Redfern, Deputy Minister of Health, Coleen Stockley and members of the Kamatsiaqtut Help Line.

One of Canada’s eminent psychiatrists, Nigerian-born Dr Adekunle Ahmed, was honoured in 2015 with the prestigious Science and Technology award at the Planet Africa Television award gala in Toronto. “AG” as he is popularly known, is currently Associate Chief (Forensic Psychiatry) and the Director of the Anger Disorders Clinic, a research clinic at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, and holds a cross appointment in the School of Criminology, University of Ottawa and adjunct Professor at Queen’s University. An Associate Fellow and Accredited Supervisor of Albert Ellis Institute of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, New York, Dr. Ahmed is the Cofounder and Co-Director of the Centre For Rational and Cognitive Therapies. His research interests include the assessment and treatment of Dysfunctional Anger and Impulsive Aggression.
