Hundreds of job seekers were at the Merivale Mall on Wednesday to explore employment opportunities at a job fair organised by the Ottawa YM-YWCA. Employers present included Federal and Provincial government departments such as Canada Revenue Agency and Correctional Services; private retails such as COSTCO, Walmart and Home Depot; and health services such as Carefor Health, GEM Health Care Services and St. Elizabeth Health Care.

According to recent reports from Statistics Canada, in Ottawa, the jobless rate jumped to 6.1 per cent in June from 5.8 per cent in May, reflecting the addition of 1,700 job seekers and the loss of 100 jobs.  On the Quebec side, Gatineau’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.5 per cent in June from 5.6 per cent, with the addition of 2,200 net new jobs. These statistics have been adjusted to eliminate seasonal influences.
