Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre on Britannia Park in Ottawa’s West end was the sight as Tayo Olafimihan and Erica Kaneza started the first step in their journey to matrimony. It was at this site that they were joined by family and friends, some two hundred odd, in the Gusaba traditional marriage ceremony in accordance with the bride’s Burundi traditions. Guests were fascinated by the country’s ancient marriage rituals, as first the bride’s father inquired as to why “these uninvited guests” were at their house. to which the groom’s family rep responded that they were there to pluck a rose from their garden. the play acting ritual continued, culminating in acceptance by the bride’s family of multiple gifts, an acknowledgement that they had accepted Tayo’s proposal to marry their daughter. The occasion was graced with Burundi dancers and drummers, resplendent in their traditional attires, providing the most entertaining spectacle for the evening.

The church wedding at the Infinity Convention Centre on Gilford Avenue on Saturday 19 August was no less lavish and entertaining. The Burundi dancers and drummers were there once gain and the 200 guests were treated to an evening of great food, music and dance, with guests coming as far as Nigeria, New York, Toronto and Montreal. Certainly a day to remember for friends and family of the new couple!
