On October 12th, members of Ottawa’s Ugandan diaspora and their friends gathered at Villa Marconi to celebrate the 51st anniversary of that country’s independence from great Britain. The executive and members of the Uganda Association of Ottawa treated guests to delicious Ugandan dishes, colourful traditional dances and exciting door prizes (which included bags of the popular “Matoke” or green banana – a staple of Ugandan cuisine). Among the speakers were Ms. Margaret Lucy Kyogire, Chargé d’Affaires at the Ugandan High Commission in Canada, and Ms. Lilly Obina, a dynamic civic engagement advocate who ran for a seat on Ottawa’s city council in 2010.
