Seyi, Robin, Emeka (drum) and Chanda lead the walk

Thursday 10 May

Community leader and advocate extraordinaire Adrienne Codette was at it again as she pulled off another successful Walk With Excellence event to honour and celebrate the class of 2018 Black graduates, from elementary to Law school.  Some fifty participants, ranging from four to whatever age, were there, gathering first at Lisgar Collegiate Institute for a warm up, networking and pep talk combo from Adrienne, before proceeding at a comradely cum leisurely pace across the bridge to the University of Ottawa for a reception hosted by the Faculty of Education Equity  Network. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Michelle Walker Scholarship to Renee Scantlebur, who is heading to Carleton University in the fall for a degree program in Criminology. Runner up award went to Chanda Jones, who will be enrolling in the Social Work degree program at Laurentian University in the fall. This scholarship was established by the Walker family in honour of their daughter, Michelle Walker, who passed away in December 2017.  The late Michelle was the creator of the adult curriculum for the Black Youth Conference and a PhD candidate at Nipissing University. Her PhD will be awarded to her posthumously in July.  Walker family members were present to witness the awards.
