The Taggart Family YM-YWCA on Argyle Avenue was the scene of a special citizenship ceremony organised by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada during which 40 new Canadians were formally granted citizenship status.  During the ceremony presided over by a Citizenship judge, each new Canadian took the Oath of Citizenship, signed the Oath of Citizenship form and received a Canadian citizenship certificate. Families and friends were there in large numbers to celebrate with new Canadian citizens, take innumerable photos and enjoy light refreshments provided by the YM-YWCA. Entertainment was also provided with exotic ethnic music and dance..

To qualify for Canadian citizenship, an individual must be a permanent resident and must also be physically present in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years with no minimum number of days per year, before applying for citizenship. Days spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident (as a temporary resident or protected person) within 5 years of applying for citizenship, count as ½ days, up to a maximum of 1 year (365 days).  In addition, a permanent resident who is between 18 years old and 54 years old, must meet language (English or French) requirements, and in addition pass the Citizenship Test.  Lastly, a permanent resident must file Canadian income taxes (if required to do so under the Income Tax Act) for 3 out of 5 years, matching the new physical presence requirement.
