There was love, laughter and pride in the room as many of us gathered on Parliament Hill to celebrate Jaku Konbit’s quarter century of service in Ottawa! It was so heart-warming to see and reconnect with Jaku Konbit staff, founders, volunteers, and supporters as this community institution showcased its history, vision and programs. Having participated in JK’s foundational meetings and watched it grow from one program at Jack Purcell, to several at Donald Street to a full range of programs for all the generations, I couldn’t help but feel proud that this organization has stood the test of time by adapting to community needs and creating new partnerships. Many thanks to the organizing committee, speakers, performers, MC, caterer and decorator for curating this unforgettable event! Here’s to 25 more, JK!

I first discovered Jaku Konbit in 2007 and was inspired by their impact in our community. Since then, they’ve grown—uplifting Ottawa’s African, Caribbean and Black community with programmes that unite generations and celebrate cultural pride.

Happy 25 years, Jaku Konbit!
