I’m deeply honoured to share that I’ve been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Orléans Leading Women and Girls Recognition Award, presented by my Member of Parliament, Marie-France Lalonde. This is in recognition of my community engagement and advocacy work in Orléans.
Being a surgical resident is all-consuming: the long hours, the steep learning curves, the constant push to be better for your patients. Finding time for community work alongside that isn’t always easy, but it’s always been important to me. And I love Ottawa! I believe that showing up for the people around you, in the OR and outside of it, is part of what makes medicine so fulfilling. And I especially love being a woman in urology.
This recognition means more than I can express. It’s a reminder of why that work matters, and a motivator to keep going!
Thank you to MP Lalonde and to everyone who has supported and championed me along the way. Women’s Day is everyday 💜

Dr. Kika Otiono is currently a surgical resident physician with the Ottawa Hospital. During her student days, she was Associate Editor of Black Ottawa Scene.
