Some 200 people were in attendance at the Mosaic Convention Centre on St. Laurent Boulevard on Sunday as the city’s premier philanthropic organization, the Angels Foundation, celebrated the 2026 Black History Month. Under the tutelage of its Founder and President, Chief Mrs. Angela Omoike, it was an evening of Nigerian Igbo cultural practices, music and dance, coupled with delicious Nigerian cuisine which amplified the camaraderie of those who were there.
With flamboyant MC BabaAfrika in charge of the proceedings, and DJ Tipsy suppling an unending stream of pounding Afrobeat music, highlights of the evening included: the Opening prayer by Rev Simon Epiphany; a discourse on Igbo culture on the significance of kola nuts by Hon Uchendu Onuoha; presentation of kola nuts by Dr. Geoff Ebere; traditional Igbo dances with masquerades by Angels Foundation members; and a message from Black History Ottawa by Board member Godwin Ifedi.
Among the dignitaries present were: Black History Ottawa President June Girvan; African Canadian Association of Ottawa President John Adeyefa; Global Community Alliance President, Yomi Pratt; Ambassador and Mrs. Ibeto; Toronto-based High Chief Eze Ndi Igbo na Canada Mazi Alakammadu ; and Black History Ottawa Board member Joanne Robinson.
