October 1 is National Seniors’ Day

National Seniors Day in Canada is celebrated annually on October 1st to recognize the significant contributions of older adults to Canadian society, the economy, and families. The day provides an opportunity for all Canadians to express gratitude, support seniors, and raise awareness about issues affecting older adults, such as health, activity, and combating elder abuse. National Seniors Day coincides with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP).  

What is National Seniors Day?

United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP). 

The United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) is observed annually on October 1st to recognize the valuable contributions of older persons to society and to raise awareness about the joys and challenges of aging. The UN General Assembly officially designated October 1st as this day in 1990 through Resolution 45/106, with the first observance occurring in 1991. 

Key Aspects of UNIDOP:

  • Purpose: To highlight the important roles older people play in society and to discuss the issues they face in the context of their lives and societal changes. 
  • Origin: Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990. 
  • Date: Celebrated on October 1st each year. 
  • Significance: The day serves as a platform to bring together stakeholders globally to address demographic shifts, promote understanding of aging, and advocate for a society that is inclusive and prepared for longevity.
