On Saturday, August 16, 2014, friends and supporters of the Agoro family gathered at Blackburn Community Park, in Blackburn Hamlet, for Dapo Fun Day. This event is held every year in August to remember and celebrate the legacy of Oladapo Agoro, a promising young man who was murdered on June 8, 2002 at a downtown Ottawa club as he intervened to stop a fight. Created by his parents and siblings at the urging of Dapo’s friends, this event provides a forum to promote peace, tolerance, and non-violent conflict resolution. The program includes a Dapo Agoro Peace award, presented annually to students of Lester B Person and Good Shepherd Schools and Gloucester High School. Among attendees at this year’s Dapo Fun Day were local politicians (candidates running for office and recently elected officials) as well as a constable from the Ottawa Police Service and various community leaders. Activities included live entertainment, a DJ on location all day, 3-on-3 basketball and 6 on 6 soccer tournaments with prizes, raffles, BBQ. All proceeds from this event went to the Dapo Agoro Foundation (more info on this organization available at: http://www.dapoagorofoundation.org/)
