Dr. Habibat A. Garuba is a consultant cardiologist at The Ottawa Hospital General Campus and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Canada. She is also appointed as an assistant professor in the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Garuba cares for patients with cardiovascular disease admitted to the hospital inpatient wards and cardiac care unit, and also outpatients in cardiology clinics. Dr. Garuba’s clinical areas of interest and expertise are transesophageal echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound), heart disease in women, cardio-obstetrics (heart disease in pregnancy), cardio-oncology (heart disease related to cancer/cancer therapy) and heart disease management in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Garuba graduated from the University of Toronto Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (First Class Honours) and became a licensed pharmacist prior to medical school. She obtained her Doctorate of Medicine from Queen’s University in 2012 with the Medal in Internal Medicine and the Edgar Forrester Prize for the highest academic standing in the final year. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2015 where she served as Chief Medicine Resident and won the CanMEDS Communicator Award in 2014. She subsequently completed a 3-year fellowship in Adult Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. followed by a clinical fellowship in Adult Echocardiography at the Heart Institute in 2019. She joined the Division of Cardiology in 2019.
