The Ghana Association of Ottawa’s GhanaFest was an unforgettable celebration of Ghanaian culture, food, and community spirit! The event drew in a diverse crowd of Ghanaian nationals, diasporans, and friends of Ghana, all united by their love for the vibrant culture and rich traditions of Ghana.
The Ghanaian community in Ottawa has come a long way since the first wave of Ghanaians arrived in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Over the years, the community has thrived, and the Ghana Association of Ottawa has been at the forefront of promoting Ghanaian culture and community engagement. With a rich history spanning decades, the association has been led by notable figures such as Mr. Peter Nonkoh, Dr. Sam Kwofie, Ms. Yvonne Appiah, Mr. Jose Aggrey, Mr. Kwaku Agyei, and Andy Kusi-Appiah, each leaving their mark on the community.
Under the current leadership of President Mr. Robert Otto, the association continues to flourish, and this year’s GhanaFest is a testament to their hard work and dedication. The event featured a mouth-watering array of Ghanaian cuisine, including the popular Ghanaian treat – bofrot, crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside, plus the ever popular kyinkafa de waakye, made fresh with ingredients all the way from Ghana, the land of gold.
The table tennis tournament, was another highlight of the event. After last year’s logistical hiccups, this year’s tournament was a resounding success, with Wofa Kras taking home the trophy. The event drew in a mix of seasoned players and newcomers, all competing in a spirit of friendly competition.
The soccer and weightlifting events were also a hit, with participants from various age groups and backgrounds showcasing their skills.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the deputy Ghana High Commissioner, who praised the Ghana Association of Ottawa for promoting Ghanaian culture and community engagement.
As we look forward to future events, the Ghana Association of Ottawa is already planning its next big bash. With a growing membership and increasing community engagement, the association is poised to become an even more important hub for Ghanaian culture and community in Ottawa.
If you are interested in attending future events or getting involved with the Ghana Association of Ottawa, be sure to follow their social media channels or reach out to President Mr. Otto to learn more.
Let’s keep the Ghanaian spirit alive and thriving in Ottawa! *
