Paying Tribute to Hazel Pompey, Former Vice President and President of the SVGAO

by

Suzette Small-Weekes, President, St. Vincent’s & Grenadines Association of Ottawa

Life takes us on many journeys, and along the way we are blessed to meet a few truly extraordinary souls.

For me, Hazel Pompey was one of those souls. Our paths first crossed within the Vincentian community, and from that meeting a genuine friendship grew—one filled with warmth, trust, and deep care.

Hazel was steadfast and resolute. A woman of wisdom, principle, and unshakable character, she carried her love for community with grace and purpose. Her strength, her generosity, and her fierce commitment to service touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Her celebration of life reminded us all of the profound impact she made. Still, her absence leaves a void that can never be replaced.

I cherished Hazel’s friendship deeply. I valued her spirit, her strength, and the countless quiet ways she uplifted those around her. Thank you, Hazel—for everything.

Rest peacefully, dear friend.

My thoughts and prayers remain with her family as they continue to navigate this loss. May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace, and may her legacy continue to shine in all the lives she touched.

As we enter a new year, I am honoured to add my voice to discussions on women’s issues—matters close to my heart—through my monthly column in Ottawa Black Scene.

May this new year fuel your soul, strengthen your mind, and inspire you to care for your well-being.

xoxo
