The African & Caribbean Association of Nunavut (ACAN) was founded in response to a widespread desire among the African and Caribbean community in Iqaluit for a supportive and welcoming environment. ACAN aims to foster a sense of belonging and provide a platform for the voices of its diverse members.

ACAN is an inclusive association committed to creating an open and accountable forum. We represent all individuals who identify with and express interest in issues related to being Black, of African descent, Caribbean, West-Indian, Afro-Caribbean, African American, and African Canadian. Our approach is fair and democratic, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.

Our core mission is to promote the economic, social, and cultural well-being of our members within Nunavut.

We strive to:
– Economic Empowerment: Advocate for economic opportunities and support initiatives that enhance the financial stability and growth of our community members.
– Social Support: Provide a network of support for individuals and families, addressing social challenges and fostering a sense of unity and solidarity.
– Cultural Enrichment: Celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of African and Caribbean communities through events, educational programs, and cultural exchanges.

ACAN envisions a vibrant, cohesive community where individuals of African and Caribbean descent can thrive and contribute to the broader Nunavut society. By fostering understanding, unity, and collaboration, we aim to create a community that not only respects and values diversity but also harnesses it for collective growth and enrichment.

Through our efforts, we aspire to create a more inclusive and culturally rich place, enhancing the quality of life for all residents and celebrating the contributions of African and Caribbean cultures to the region.
