In the wake of Mark Carney’s historic election victory last Monday, we welcome our readers to the May 2025 edition of your favorite news magazine. Our Top Story for this month is the special award to two of our iconic community leaders, June Girvan and Ketcia Peters. We also continue our tradition of paying special Mothers’ Day tributes to the following: Joycelyn Constant, Vera Isolyn Officer-Miller, Mama Esther Mulli and Therese Yembe.

Journalism professor Adrian Harewood provides us with a Black history story titled: Contrast -The newspaper that broke ground for Black Canadians; while regular columnist Dr. Kwaku Kusi-Appiah shares his personal insight on the impact of tariffs on Ottawa’s Black community, a very timely piece in light of the economic assaults on Canada by eccentric and erratic US President Trump. Another important feature comes from Ottawa Public Health, with a timely warning on staying safe around water in spring and summer. Columnist Ifeoma Chinwuba provides a delightful and entertaining report on her visit to the Fifty-Five Plus Lifestyle Show, geared to older adults.

Here is the result of the April 2025 poll: Do you believe that President Trump is serious about making Canada the 51st state of the USA? Yes 100% No 0% Thank you to all who voted.

Remember to vote in the May 2025 poll: Are you satisfied with the results of the Canadian federal election held on 28 April 2025?

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, productive and peaceful month of May.
