Good morning all
Welcome to the August 2014 edition of Black Ottawa Scene. Hard to believe, it is already eleven months since we first dipped our toes into the relatively unknown waters of on-line photo-journalism. How time flies! Our menu for August starts with our Top Story, a special photo gallery honouring our graduates, enterprising young men and women who have excelled in high school, college and university. We salute their energy, passion and achievements as they proceed in the next stage of their life journey. We also bring you the exciting news of the launch of the Nelson Mandela square, by the city of Ottawa, in honour of the global icon who touched so many lives by his resilience in the face of adversity and his readiness to forgive even those who had cruelly brutalized him and his comrades in the struggle against apartheid.
Soccer analyst and coach Andy Kusi-Appiah returns with an insightful post-mortem of the just concluded World cup of Soccer, while newcomer Ifrah Hasssan leads readers in ajourney of understanding of the meaning of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, celebrations that hold major significance to Moslems worldwide. Our interviews are just as exciting, starting an impromptu conversation with the High Commissioner for Nigeria Chief Ojo Maduekwe. Staff Sergent Isobel Granger of the Ottawa Police is a well-respected figure in the law enforcement scene in the national capital; what many don’t know about this unassuming role model, is her involvement on the international stage in training police in other countries.
On the event calendar, we feature the annual colourful Carnival of Cultures showcasing music and dance from across the globe, faces at Canada Day on Parliament Hill, Barbados fund-raising gala, TD Bank jazz festival, CARICOM Day reception hosted by Caribbean diplomats, Nigerian community mega picnic which annually brings together Nigerians and friends of Nigeria. And finally on the People Making a difference, we feature Ottawa volunteer extraordinaire, Adrienne Codett.
We also urge to take a few minutes to participate in our monthly poll, this month a survey of your views on doctor-assisted suicide.
Enjoy.
