It is with a heavy heart that we bring our readers the tragic news of the sudden passing of Black Ottawa Scene’s long-time star reporter and editorial associate, Joy Osiagwu, our Top Story for December 2024. Joy died on Thursday 7 November 2024, while visiting her home country, Nigeria, following complications from surgery. Words alone cannot truly express our sorrow at the loss of our friend, associate and a veteran journalist, totally dedicated to bringing readers the very best quality reports, steeped in her extensive training and experience as a media icon. Our prayers and condolences to her husband Kenneth, children Kaine, Chukwunwike and Kanyiwulia. Joy’s last assignment was her coverage of the Ottawa Golden Oldies Black seniors event on Saturday 19 October 2024.
Other news of note in this edition is the award of the Order of Ottawa award to Franklin Epape and Professor Josephine Etowa, and the United Way Community Builder award to community leader and social justice advocate, Suzette Small-Weekes. Columnist and published writer Ifeoma Chinwuba provides a review of the book: Every Drop of Blood is Red, while academic Professor Kwaku Kusi-Appiah gives an insightful piece titled: Mimicry Has Consequences. Editorial Associate Ijeoma Ukazu also brings readers her report on the award winning musical: The Lion King, as well the World AIDS Day hosted by the AIDS Committee of Ottawa.
