Good morning folks
Happy New Year!
We are excited that 2026 marks the 13th year of the operation of your favourite news magazine. It’s thanks to the readers and advertisers that we have been able to keep this medium going for so long with the very few resources that we have. Thank you and thank you!
Our Top Story for January 2026 is the special tribute to the late Cynthia Oreggio Campbell, mother of iconic community leader Ken Campbell. Also honoured in this edition are the late Bev Brown, former president of Black History Ottawa, and late Hazel Pompey, former president of the St. Vincent & Grenadines Association of Ottawa.
In this edition, regular columnist Andy Kusi-Appiah starts the new year with a brand new series on one of his passions, the environment. His piece Kusi-Appiah: “Volunteering for the environment” is a must-read for this month.
As we enter the dog days of winter, we bring you a very timely piece: “Snow removal safety tips for seniors”, words of advice applicable to everyone, not only seniors. Another topic of interest is from Ottawa Public Health: “Move, Sleep, and Socialize Your Way to Better Health”.
All these and more from the January editor of Black Ottawa Scene
Here is the result of the December 2025 poll: Do you plan to make a donation to a charitable organization during the Christmas season? Yes 100% No 0% . Thank you to all who voted. Remember to take part in the January 2026 poll: Do you take part in winter sports e.g. skating, skiing etc.?
ASKING A SPECIAL FAVOUR FROM OUR READERS
As we head into the 13th year of publication, we want to ask a special favour of our readers. As you know, Black Ottawa Scene is run by volunteers, with some support from our few advertisers. Most of the expense of running comes out on my pocket. We are therefore appealing to our readers and followers to donate to Black Ottawa Scene, so as to cover our operational expenses and occasionally provide stipends to our reporters and feature writers, in appreciation of their contribution to the publication. Your kind and generous contribution can make a difference to the furfure of the community service. To make a donation, click on the “Donate” button on the top right hand corner of the website: www.blackottawascene.com and follow the directions.
