Good morning folks
To say that the past three months have been challenging to people round the world would be an understatement! With the covid 19 pandemic mercilessly taking a toll on just about everybody, it is hard to imagine any other news item dominating the media headlines at this time. But that’s exactly what happened this past week, with the brutally callous death of a Black man George Floyd, in the hands of a Minnesota policeman, taking over the news waves. Such is the world we live in; in the USA, Black people are either dying in unprecedented large numbers from the corona virus or are being sent to their early graves by racist police officers!
On another sad note, our Top Story is the passing of iconic Ottawa community leader and advocate, Desmond Doran. His dynamic presence will be missed by Ottawa’s Black community. Our condolences to his family.
The Covid 19 pandemic has brought out the best in our community. Nigerian-born Faith Eluwa is an Ottawa resident who has made it her mission to make and distribute face masks to anyone who needs it. Kudos to this remarkable young woman for her selfless service to the national capital region. Another first for Ottawa’s favorite police officer, Isobel Granger, this time for her appointment as the city’s director of the Ottawa Police’s, newly created Directorate: Respect, Values and Inclusion (RVI) . Way to go Isobel!
We also bring you news of the election of Dominique Anglade as Quebec Liberal party leader, the first person of colour to lead a major political party in the province. It’s been a long while since we heard from contributor Jephtée Elysée, but this month she shares her insights on how to internally deal with tragedies such as the death of George Floyd.
