Toronto, Canada. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Canada, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, has presented a 2014 National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada Medal and Award for Best Editorial, Free Expression, Long Years of Service, Concept and Visualization to Moses A. Mawa, Chairman and Publisher at Planet Africa Group. The award was presented at the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite at Queen’s Park in Toronto on Friday, November 14th, 2014.

“Mr. Mawa is also honoured for his distinguished leadership and dedication to social justice, human rights and democracy,” says Thomas Saras, President of the Council. Other honorees included York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe, Toronto Police Deputy Chief Peter Sloly and CBC Television’s Marivel Taruc. Mr. Mawa is also the President & CEO of Silvertrust Media as well as the Transformation Institute for Leadership and Innovation, which are also responsible for the Transformation Awards, Diversity Expo and Magazine, Destiny and other initiatives.

“This honour is an affirmation that what we are doing is highly valued. I thank God for making this possible,” says Mr. Mawa, who has served as Executive Producer of Planet Africa Television, which has been broadcast on OMNI TV in Canada, BEN TV in Europe and NTA International since 2002 and of “Arise!”, presently aired on Vision TV. He has also served as Publisher of Planet Africa Magazine, which has been widely distributed in stores such as Chapters, Indigo, Wal-Mart, International News, Gateway and Daisy, in Canada, the United States and beyond.

“All of these achievements would not have been possible without the support of my dear wife and associate Patricia Bebia Mawa as well as our entire team of dedicated staff and associates,” says Mr. Mawa. Each year, his team produces the Diversity Expo, Transformation Awards, the Planet Africa Awards program as well as various leadership and innovation programs. In 2008, Mr. Mawa created the Crossover Mentorship Program, which engages role models to help transform the lives of youth.

In 2007, Mr. Mawa was commissioned by the Government of Ontario as producer of the Bicentenary Legacy Project, which included a documentary film, a magazine and a photo reel on the commemoration of the Bicentenary of the 1807 Abolition of the British Slave Trade Act. He is the Director and Producer of “Harambee: Pulling Together”, a documentary film funded by Rogers Media, on how the African Canadian community in Ottawa brought about positive change as a result of the Kasonde Tragedy.

Mr. Mawa holds a B.A. in Film Studies from Carleton University. He has been trained at the Canadian Screen Training Centre as a multimedia and television producer, has produced radio programs and in 2011, received the Visionary Award from the ReelWorld Film Festival for his work in creating opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds in the media. In 2010, he received the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada Award for “Professional Excellence in Media”, which makes this his second honour from the Council.

In 2013, Mr. Mawa and his wife Patricia received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals, marking the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne as Queen of England and Canada’s Head of State. The duo was referred to as ‘Power Couple’ in a CNN worldwide broadcast in July 2013. Mr. Mawa was honoured by the Toronto Police with the “Excellence in Community Service Award” in 2009 and he received the 2011 BBPA Harry Jerome Media Award. He is also profiled in Who’s Who in Black Canada.
