This year marks the posthumous centenary of the birth of the Father of the Tanzanian Nation and First President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. In recognizing his legacy, we commend the United Republic of Tanzania’s decision to set every 14th October as Nyerere Day and find it necessary to celebrate this year’s Nyerere Day in a special way. The Institute of African Studies at Carleton University on October 26th collaborated with the High Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania in Canada to organize a one-day event to celebrate the inspiring life of Mwalimu Nyerere. Former Tanzanian President, HE Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete was the keynote speaker at the event hosted at Carleton’s Dominion Chalmer’s Centre.
