Saturday 30 November 2013 marked an important milestone in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ottawa. In partnership with the River Jordan Ministries, Somerset West Community Health Centre held an evening of prayer and reflections, in support of those living with the HIV, those affected by HIV and, those who have lost the battle, and their families and friends. The AIDS Awareness Week was capped by this unique service at the River Jordan Ministries on 36 Bentley Street, Nepean. During the event persons living with HIV talked about their lived experiences, prayers were offered and professionals provided important information on prevention and management of HIV. Fighting stigma and advocating for more services for those affected directly or indirectly by HIV was a key message.

The Reverend Joseph Kiirya declared that River Jordan Ministries is HIV-related stigma free ministry. The event was attended by about 80 people. There was a presentation on how one can get HIV and how one cannot get HIV, to remove the stigma, myths and misconceptions about HIV. Statistics on the prevalence of HIV among African, Caribbean and Black populations in Canada, Ontario and Ottawa were shared. People who have lived in good health with HIV for many years talked about their experience. This is going to be an annual event at River Jordan Ministries in partnership with Somerset West Community Health Centre.
