A Simple Lie

Review by Vive Akugha

A simple lie is about a lady lying about her health to her ex with an ulterior motive. Boma’s (Bisola Aiyeola) lie about having cancer summons and maintains the presence of some friends. Azeem (Emmanuel Ikubese) is Boma’s friend, Fade (Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori) is Boma’s friend, Xavier (Kachi Nnochiri) is Donna’s friend, and, Donna (Bolaji Ogunmola) is married to Azeem. They are connected with the different friendships linking them.

They are all together despite their opinions of each other to console and be there for Boma. She lies that she has cancer however the reason she lies and all the other secrets revealed are much more damaging. As things unveil, the tension builds leaving you guessing the next target and degree of the secret revealed as you choose sides with characters continuously until the end. It’s also interesting seeing Boma search for answers as they question her about her illness.

The movie covers topics such as abuse (emotional and physical), trust, relationship threats, the desire to be in a relationship and how it can cloud you, the need to understand and embrace your self-worth, the need for boundaries, and different definitions of friendship. As Fade said, “You didn’t say malaria. Boma, you did not choose typhoid. You went to carry it from top…cancer”. Watch to find out why she did so and watch to see the characters spiral with each secret uncovered. I loved the ending most, after they hear screams outside. All the performances were great, it is a great watch.
