Sunday 24 September

The unseasonably sweltering heat last Sunday did not deter hundreds of visitors, as they trooped to Lansdowne Park’s Horticulture Building to watch a celebration of the people and culture of the beautiful idyllic Caribbean island of Barbados. The event was marked with music, dance, culinary demonstrations, tourism promotion and more, plus poster displays of local heroes such as legendary cricketer Garfield (Gary) Sobers and award-winning singer Rhihanna.

Posting on Facebook, columnist Sarah Onyango had this to say:

One of my favourite moments from tonight’s #BarbadosDay celebration: the Royal Canadian Legion representative bestowing commemorative #Canada150 gold (yeah, actual gold!) medals on High Commissioner Yvonne Walkes and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart. Also, the Prime Minister presented the High Commissioner with a special award for excellence in diplomacy. What a treat it was to observe the medal presentation with a Polish-Canadian veteran who, several years ago, attended the same ceremony I did honouring a Barbadian Canadian pilot and his colleagues who saved many Poles during WW2! Full circle moment!
