Discover the Hidden Stories That Built Canada’s Capital  (https://BlackHistoryTour.eventbrite.ca)

by Jean-Marie Guerrier, President Black History Ottawa

What if the streets of Ottawa could tell stories you’ve never heard?

Join Black History Ottawa for the Black History in Ottawa Streets Bus Tour—an inspiring journey through the nation’s capital that uncovers the remarkable people, places, and events that helped shape Ottawa and Canada.

Travel beyond the familiar landmarks and discover the stories of Black pioneers, entrepreneurs, artists, soldiers, educators, labour leaders, and community builders whose contributions have often been overlooked. From the railway porters who transformed Canada’s labour movement, to trailblazers like Michaëlle Jean, Oscar Peterson, Jean Augustine, and local community leaders who changed Ottawa forever, every stop reveals another chapter of our shared history.

This engaging and educational experience brings history to life through archival research, storytelling and interactive discussion. Participants will explore how Black Canadians helped build businesses, advance human rights, strengthen Canada’s labour movement, enrich the arts, defend the country in times of war, and shape the inclusive society we continue to build today.

Perfect for schools, community organizations, workplaces, visitors, and lifelong learners, the tour encourages participants to see Ottawa through a new lens—one that celebrates resilience, innovation, leadership, and the enduring contributions of Black Canadians.

Come discover the history hidden in plain sight.

Because when we tell the whole story, we all better understand Canada’s story.

The tours are on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:30am, departing from the YMCA at 180 Argyle street.
