Ottawa Golden Oldies Black Seniors’ Club hosts welcome social for members

Some 40 members of the newly launched Ottawa Golden Oldies Seniors’ Club were at the YMCA Ottawa centre on Argyle Avenue to mix and mingle with new and returning members.
In his opening remarks, Program Coordinator Godwin Ifedi, outlined the goals of the club: to connect members to existing programs and services for seniors in Ottawa; organize programs and activities to help members maintain and sustain their physical and emotional well-being, and reduce social isolation. He narrated his meetings and contacts with key community agencies such as Ottawa Public Health, Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO), Somali Centre for Family Services, St. Vincent & Grenadines Association, Trinidad & Tobago Association, Nigerian Canadian Association of Ottawa, and Le Conseil Économique et Social d’Ottawa Carleton (CÉSOC) to establish supports and partnerships for the club. He also expressed his gratitude to the YMCA Ottawa and Gabriel Pizza for their in-kind support for the club. He also affirmed the close relationship between the club and its parent organization, the African Canadian Association of Ottawa, led by President John Adeyefa and Executive Director, Hector Addison.
In his welcoming speech ACAO President John Adeyefa thanked Program Coordinator Godwin Ifedi for his leadership in establishing and sustaining this much needed self-governing organization and pledged the unwavering support from the African Association Of Ottawa.

The day’s program included the launch of the club’s new website, Ottawa Golden Oldies (www.ottawagoldenoldies .com). This was followed by a movie docu-drama. “A Cheerful Giver”, produced by Black History Ottawa about prevention of fraud against seniors, which generated a spirited discussion by members on strategies that seniors could utilize to protect themselves from financial scams, especially internet fraud.
To the background of Afro-beat music by DJ Hector Addison, refreshments followed, with pizza form Gabriel Pizza, puff puff and delicious cupcakes. A truly enjoyable evening!
