Some 400 members and guests were at the Ukrainian Banquet Centre on Byron Avenue to attend the 67th Independence Day anniversary gala hosted by the Ghana Association of Ottawa. Under the leadership of GAO President Robert Otoo, the event featured a keynote speech from Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, His Excellency Rashford Anselem Sowah, rebranding of the GAO website, cultural dances, dinner and a fashion show, plus music and dancing.
In his keynote speech, His Excellency Rashford Sowah outlined the economic successes and challenges facing the country, and specifically addressed the current hotly debated law recently passed by Ghana’s parliament, imposing penalties on citizens identifying as LGBT.
In his speech, Past President Kwaku Adyei walked the guests through the history of the evolution of Ghana’s education system and institutions since the colonial days to the present day.
Three members of the Ghana community received Outstanding Achievement awards: Hector Addison, Executive Director of the African Canadian Association of Ottawa (ACAO); Dr. Kadua Amanfi, and Elder Peter Nonkor.
