Members of the Nunavut Black History Society

Tuesday 12 March 2024 

On March 12, 2024 the Honourable Margaret Nakashuk (Minister of Human Resources, Family Services, and responsible for the status of women, homelessness, poverty reduction and the WSCC) invited our President, Stephanie Bernard to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut for territorial recognition of her work as a Black Canadian trailblazer through the founding and work of the Nunavut Black History Society (NBHS).

In attendance was the Deputy Minister of Human Resources, Kristie Cronin, along with NBHS board members, voting members, volunteers and community members offering their support.

We sincerely thank the Hon Minister Margaret Nakashuk and her office for this honour, as well as her warm reception at the Nunavut Assembly. We also thank the Premier of Nunavut, PJ Akeeagok, his cabinet and MLAs for hosting us. It was an unforgettable moment of pride for our organization and community. Please see the statement from Hon.
