I heard the Miguel de Armas Quartet for the first time at the 2015 Ottawa Jazz Festival. I enjoyed their engaging and lovely music, and especially the complex rhythms from the piano that wove through and layered with those of the percussion and drums. Their blend was wonderful, especially considering the number of rhythmic instruments — none too strong in the mix. This quartet is worthy of Main Stage presence of the Ottawa Jazz Festival, and I hope to see a lot more of them.
