Saturday 1 February 2025

Good morning all

As we enter the month of February, 2025, we are mindful that this month is celebrated as Black History Month, to showcase the contribution of people of African heritage to the Canadian mosaic. We urge our readers to attend as many Black History Month events as possible; info available at the Black History Ottawa website: Black History Month 2025 | Black History Ottawa.

Our Top Story for February 2025 is the Martin Luther King Jnr Day event, hosted by the Ottawa DreamKeepers. Kudos to all the award winners who were honoured in memory of the late late iconic US civil rights champion. Alongside this report, we bring readers the full text of the keynote speech by Ottawa Deputy Mayor Rawlson King, plus a tribute to the legendary social justice advocate, by Kwaku Kusi-Appiah, titled: Martin Luther King Jr. lives in my heart!

The province of Ontario goes to the polls on 28 February, 2025. In keeping with our tradition, we bring readers the profiles of the Black candidates nominated by the three major political parties: Liberal, NDP and Conservative parties. Unfortunately, due to tight publishing timelines, we have only been able to post the profiles of those available on their respective parties’ websites. For the rest, we are only able to post their names and ridings. Nevertheless, we urge all our readers to go out and vote; it is the only way you can make your voice count.

Mindful of the needs of our seniors, we bring you two important articles: Staying Safe Behind The Wheel, and Help Seniors Combat Loneliness. Finally , we bring you an interesting piece on wealth management by Sandro Ferreira titled: The Future of DEI: Why I Choose to Empower Through Education and Opportunity Creation.

Here is the result of the January 2025 poll: Do you feel confident that 2025 will be a better year than 2024 for Canadians, regarding employment, homelessness and cost of living? Yes 0% No 100% Thank you to all who voted. Remember to vote on the February 2025 poll: Do you plan to attend a Black History Month event this February?

Wishing all the best to you and your loved ones.
