Good morning folks

Happy Canada Day! Hope you will be taking time to enjoy our national day as well this beautiful summer weather. Our Top Story for July 2026 is one of extreme sadness, the funeral of one of our city’s most iconic community leaders, Abdi Karod, former CEO of the Somali Centre for Family Services. Our condolences to his family and loved ones.

In this edition we also bring you the Black Youth Court Navigation program, an important contribution in addressing the rather alarming number of young Black boys and girls caught up in the criminal justice system. On a happier note we bring you news of the Pearson Centre’s honoring of the Hon. Jean Augustine, a civic icon and trailblazer in Canada’s political landscape.

All these and more in the July 2026 edition of Black Ottawa Scene.

Here is the result of the June 2026 poll: Are you planning a vacation within Canada this summer? Yes 80% No 20% Thank you to all who voted. Remember to vote in the July 2026 poll: Have you watched any of the games in the ongoing FIFA World Cup of Soccer?

Wishing you and your loved ones a most enjoyable summer.
