Welcome to the June 2026 edition of Black Ottawa Scene. Our Top Story is our report on the LASI Coalition Professional Day which brought together staff and volunteers of the various agencies serving newcomers to Canada.
Another news of note is the recent social by the Ottawa Golden Oldies Seniors Club which brought together our elders for an afternoon of music, dance, games and delicious food and refreshments. We also bring you news the election of a new Board of Directors for Burundi We Want; plus the election of Angelica Kalubiaka as Curator of the Ottawa Global Shapers Hub.
Columnist Andy Kusi-Appiah continues his crusade for a healthy environment with his piece: From Tree to Wood: What Grandma Akrasi’s Proverb Teaches Ottawa About Climate and Community; Rev Daniel Joseph provides an inspirational spiritual message: Let My Word Abide in You, and the Canadian Women of Colour Leadership Network weighs in with: What We Heard When Black Women Gathered to Talk About Maternal Health.
On a sad note, we bring you news of the passing of Nana Helena Akohene-Mensah and Carmen Jones. Our heartfelt condolences to their respective families.
