On June 1, The Pearson Centre was proud to host its Annual Laureate Award Dinner in the beautiful Canada Room at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The Laureate Award is given each year by the Pearson Centre to a Canadian whose contributions exemplify the values of equity, inclusion, and social justice.

This year’s Laureate was the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, Canada’s first ever Black Member of Parliament and a trailblazer who has helped shape a more equitable and inclusive country.

Co-chaired by the Hon. Greg Fergus, MP for Hull-Aylmer and former Speaker of the House of Commons, and Tatiana Auguste, MP for Terrebonne, the evening brought together leaders from across public life to celebrate Augustine’s remarkable achievements. London West MP Arielle Kayabaga closed the event with important reflections on a life of service. From the moment Augustine entered the hall to the final farewells, it was an evening of joy and reflection. Musical performances by drummer Wakhanu Khaemba and vocal artist Aiyana set the tone of celebration. A fireside chat with Minister of Health Hon. Marjorie Michel gave those present a chance to hear Augustine’s reflections on her past work and insights into the challenges we still face as a nation.
