Family, friends, and community leaders gathered at the Mosaic Convention Centre on Saturday, June 6, to celebrate a remarkable milestone in the life of entrepreneur, community advocate, and fashion icon Phyllis Bourne as she marked her 70th birthday.

The elegant celebration brought together guests from across Ottawa’s Black communities to honour a woman whose influence has spanned entrepreneurship, cultural promotion, community service, and family life. The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of gratitude as family and friends reflected on Bourne’s many contributions over the decades.

Among those in attendance were prominent community leaders, including June Girvan, President of Black History Ottawa; Jean-Marie Guerrier, Vice-President of Black History Ottawa; Joanne Robinson of Flo’s Seniors; and Yomi and Kelly Pratt of the Global Community Alliance, as well as family members and longtime friends.

Guests were treated to a touching rendition of Oh Happy Day, by Phyllis’ daughter, Ewura-Abena, a fitting tribute to a woman whose life has touched so many people.

Throughout the evening, family members shared stories highlighting Bourne’s devotion to her family, her entrepreneurial spirit, and her unwavering commitment to community development.

A cultural highlight of the celebration came with a vibrant performance by the Ngoma of Africa Dance Troupe, whose energetic dance brought guests to their feet. The performance celebrated African heritage and reflected Bourne’s longstanding commitment to promoting African culture through fashion and community engagement.

One of the most touching moments came when her husband, Dr. Orson Bourne, spoke about the central role family plays in his wife’s life. He reflected on her dedication as a wife and mother, noting that family has always remained at the heart of everything she does.

Guests also shared personal memories that painted a portrait of a woman known not only for her business success but also for her generosity and willingness to support others.

Speaking during the celebration, one community member described Bourne as a visionary entrepreneur whose influence extends across multiple sectors.

“When you talk about business development, consultancy, real estate, and investment, Phyllis is always part of the conversation,” he said. “She is extremely business-minded and has helped many people understand the importance of entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.”

Her impact on Ottawa’s cultural landscape was also highlighted. “She has always been passionate about promoting African clothing and culture. Many people in our community have benefited from her expertise and creativity.”

As the evening continued, guests enjoyed a feast of African cuisine, and the formal program gave way to music and dancing.

While the celebration marked Phyllis Bourne’s 70th birthday, it was equally a celebration of her legacy. Through entrepreneurship and community service, she has helped shape Ottawa’s Black communities while inspiring others to pursue excellence.

As family and friends gathered around the celebrant for photographs, one message resonated throughout the room: Phyllis Bourne’s impact extends far beyond the businesses she has built. Her true legacy lies in the countless lives she has touched, the culture she has championed, and the community she continues to strengthen.
