Coming Home to Yourself: Rebuilding Self-Trust After Disconnection

by Suzette Small-Weekes | BrandingbyWeekes

We don’t lose ourselves all at once. Disconnection happens quietly—through small moments of self-abandonment: saying yes when we mean no, ignoring fatigue, staying busy to avoid what needs care. This isn’t failure; it’s feedback. And the moment we name it, the journey home begins.

Rebuilding self-trust doesn’t require grand gestures. It starts with small, honest promises—ones we can keep. A glass of water before coffee. A brief pause between meetings. Stepping outside for fresh air. Ending the workday when we said we would. Each kept promise reminds the nervous system: You can trust me again.

The body often speaks before the mind catches up. A tight chest may signal a boundary asking to be honoured. A knotted stomach can be an invitation to pause. A deep, open breath? That’s often a yes. Taking just 60 seconds to check in—hand to heart or belly, asking What do I notice? What do I need?—is self-trust in motion.

Trust can fray when boundaries fade. Repair doesn’t require drama, only clarity. Simple statements such as “That doesn’t work for me,” or “I need to leave by seven,” protect energy without explanation. Boundaries aren’t punishments; they’re policies that preserve peace.

And when we inevitably slip—when we override our needs—gentleness matters. Instead of shame, try repair: name what happened, normalize it, and choose one small action that honours you now. Trust grows through consistency, not perfection.

A grounding practice to support this return is The Three Returns: return to breath before deciding, return to the body to listen, and return to choose by asking, What’s the kindest option available to me right now?

This month, as we honour Mother’s Day, we also acknowledge the quiet, powerful act of learning to mother ourselves—meeting our needs with patience, offering ourselves compassion, and creating the safety we may have once sought outside of us. Whether you are nurturing others, remembering someone who nurtured you, or rediscovering how to care for yourself, this is part of the journey home.

Coming home to yourself isn’t a single moment—it’s a daily rhythm. One promise kept. One boundary honoured. One breath that says, I’m here.

Thank you for sharing this space with me.
May this week be a homecoming—quiet, honest, steady.
And may your choices reflect the love you are learning to give yourself.

Until next time, walk gently.
