Kelly and Yomi Pratt have done it again! Under their flagship Global Community Alliance, they pulled off yet another incredibly successful Black History Month gala on Saturday 22 February at Ottawa’s Sheraton Hotel. As usual the guest list reads like a who-is-who in the national capital’s diverse population. VIP’s like Mayor Jim Watson, Minister of Labour Yasir Naqvi, members of provincial parliament, city councillors, senior school board officials, leaders from Ottawa’s Black community, they were all assembled to celebrate the finale of the city’s 2014 Black History Month.
It is excellent that the Global Alliance is continuing the long held tradition of a gala dinner to close off Black History Month. This is an event that first began in the 1980s on Parliament Hill, in Room 200 West Block and hosted by the BHM Committee.
Congratulations on continuing to solidify the presence of people of African Descent in Canada which dates back to the early 1600s. As we celebrate the UN’s Decade of African people let us not forget some of our Ottawa community pioneers, such as MaiRuth Sarsfield, Isis Officer and others who made a difference within our communities and across Canada.
