Good morning all

Hope you and your loved ones are enjoying the beautiful fall weather. Our Top Story for November is the passing of our friend and veteran labour relations specialist Joe Enwerokowe in October. Our condolences to his lovely wife Kathy and son Paul. May his soul rest in peace.

Esteemed Nursing Professor Josephine Etowa continues to garner more accolades, this time a Fellowship from the Academy of Nursing, one of our lead stories in this edition. We also bring you news of special honour to community leader Sophia Jacob, by the Society of Professional Accountants of Canada. Speaking of honours, we also report on the community award to three Medical Officers of Health including Ottawa’s own Dr. Vera Etches; these heroes and their respective teams have been leading the fight against covid 19 in our region. Our attention has also been caught by a troubling ruling by an Ontario judge to the effect that racism allegations had defamed two women. This ruling will certainly be studied closely by legal experts and Black community activists and advocates in their ongoing fight against anti-Black racism.

Among the notable reports in this edition is the launching of a unique Black health research unit by the University of Ottawa. From our Diaspora is most welcome news that the malaria vaccine for children has received approval from the World Health Organization; this is certainly a significant step in tackling a disease that accounts for hundreds of fatalities annually, among children in developing countries. Our Interview this month features children’s counsellor, Stacey Karuhanga.

Here is the result of the October 2021 poll: Are you satisfied with the results of the recently concluded Federal elections? Yes 50% No 50 % Thank you to all who voted. Remember to vote in the November survey: Have you received at least one Covid 19 vaccination?

All these and more in the November edition of Black Ottawa Scene. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and productive month of November.

Stay blessed!
