Ernest Bugya Akyeampong 1939-2025

In Loving Memory
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernest Akyeampong at the age of 86. He transitioned peacefully in Toronto on August 25, 2025. Though we feel the ache of his absence, we take comfort and solace in knowing that he has been reunited with our Heavenly Father, and our dearly departed mother, Gladys Akyeampong. Ernest was an amazing individual, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys of 58 years, and he leaves to cherish and carry on his legacy his
children, Lisa (Kwame) and Kevin (Nazlin), his 5 grandchildren, Abena “Bebe”, Kofi, Nana Adjoa, Jamil and Khalil, as well as his beloved sister Grace Boafo, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends.
For Ernest the definition of family far extended beyond his nuclear family, it included extended family both domestically and internationally, and his community family in Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, New Jersey and beyond. Papa or Dadabapa as his family affectionately called him, was dependable and our north star. You could count on him for sound advice always delivered with love, kindness and care. He was our go-to person, a constant anchor in any storm, and a deeply generous and loving man. His generosity knew no bounds as he liberally gave of his time, his talent and his resources.
He was a pillar in the Ghanaian community, having helped to establish the Ghanaian Association of Ottawa which supported many individuals in their transition to life in Canada. Although he retired from the federal government in 2007, he remained particularly interested in the wellbeing and success of Ghanaian civil servants and served as a trusted guide and mentor to many.
Ernest Akyeampong’s journey from the humble beginnings in Ghana to becoming a respected statistician and beloved community leader exemplifies the power of determination, education, kindness and generosity. His legacy of hard work, generosity and joy will continue in those he has left behind and will serve as inspiration to future generations.

Our heartfelt condolences to the Akyeampong family as we share in the loss of our dear uncle Ernest. The Andoh family is deeply saddened as we have fond memories from our many family visits when we lived in Ottawa. Uncle Ernest always received us with a warm smile and kind words of wisdom. We will treasure the joy and laughter shared with our parents and the friendship that lasted for over 40 years. We pray the good Lord will hide you in his bosom until we meet again. May your soul rest in perfect peace.

Sunday 5 October 2025

By Sarah Onyango

This weekend, an illustrious elder was given a grand send-off befitting the remarkable life he created here in Canada after migrating here from Ghana. Family, friends, colleagues, and even former neighbours from the 1970s, gathered, some having traveled from the continent and the US, to mourn and celebrate Elder “Uncle” Ernest, one of the founders of Ottawa’s Ghanaian association. A devoted husband and patriarch, steadfast friend, generous mentor, hard-working and highly accomplished professional, these are just some of the attributes mentioned in the tributes we heard during the three-day homegoing. Many thanks to the family, clergy and community members who organized the ceremonies and receptions giving us all an opportunity to bid our final earthly farewell to “Uncle Earnest”. May he now enjoy his eternal rest and smile down at us as we seek to emulate the incredible example he has set.
