Good morning folks
Happy Emancipation Day! Welcome to the August edition of Black Ottawa Scene where we endeavour to bring our readers the best of news and features, as we showcase and celebrate people who identify as African, Caribbean and Black in Canada’s capital region and beyond. For our August 2024 edition, we continue our tradition of honouring our 2024 graduates from all levels of education. In that light, our Top Story for the month features Kenya Fithe, a bright young woman of Ethiopian heritage, who graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Acadia University in Nova Scotia. We also salute Melody Omboli, LL.M International Law, University of Montreal, and Samad Atta, B.Sc. Engineering, Carleton University. We also feature the annual Walk of Excellence which honours all 2024 graduates in the city of Ottawa.
Troubling reports continue to come in about systemic racism include our features on the disproportionate representation of Black people on the Ottawa Police use of force, and systemic racism within the hallowed halls of the the Privy Council Office.
On a happier note, we bring you the 70th birthday celebration of community leader Obasola Fasoyinu, the 50th anniversary of the renowned Rockers United Sports Club, and the conferment of the prestigious Oladapo Agoro Award For Peace to Oriana Mesfin . We also bring you an interesting video interview with respected cleric, Bishop Rudolph McEwan
All these and more in the August 2024 edition of your favorite newspaper.
Here is the result of the July 2024 poll: Did you watch the Stanley Cup finals between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers? Yes 25% No 75% Thank you to all who voted.
