Seniors Celebrate Community at Ottawa Golden Oldies Social Event
By Obasola Bamigbola
The Tom Brown Arena was filled with warm connections on Saturday, May 2, 2026, as the Ottawa Golden Oldies Seniors’ Club hosted a lively social event designed to bring seniors together through culture and shared experiences.
From the moment guests arrived, there was a sense of familiarity in the room, friends reconnecting, new faces being welcomed, and a shared anticipation for an afternoon of activity. The event was anchored by Donnielle Roman, whose energy and charisma immediately set the tone.
Kicking things off with an interactive icebreaker, Donnielle invited participants to “stand if…”, a playful prompt that had seniors laughing and discovering common ground.
The program transitioned into music-based games that sparked both nostalgia and friendly competition. Seniors were challenged to identify artists from short song clips, all while enjoying light snacks and refreshments. Around the hall, small groups formed organically, while a few took to the microphone for karaoke. The room buzzed with conversation and laughter, as participants connected through games and shared memories.
Winners of the games were rewarded with small gifts, adding an extra layer of excitement. Soon after, the first raffle draw brought a wave of anticipation, as raffle tickey numbers were called and prizes handed out to delighted recipients.
Music remained at the heart of the gathering. As familiar oldies filled the room, many seniors couldn’t resist the call of the dance floor. Some swayed gently, others danced with spirited steps, proving that joy and rhythm know no age.
The event paused for lunch, where guests were treated to a spread of African delicacies. Conversations deepened over plates of food.
Following lunch, the second raffle draw kept spirits high, with more winners celebrated amid cheers.
Dance, dance, dance became the unofficial closing theme of the afternoon. The dance floor filled once again, this time with even more enthusiasm.
The Ottawa Golden Oldies Seniors’ Club once again demonstrated the importance of creating spaces where seniors can connect, celebrate, and feel valued. More than just a social event, the gathering served as a reminder that community, culture, and joy are essential at every stage of life.
