Good morning all

As I watch the leaves turn orange, yellow and other shades in between and the temperatures begin to drop, I am reminded that we are now in the fall.  Too soon in my books as the summers in this country are altogether too short and the winters too long. But fall or autumn as some call it, is also a time of reflection as we move from the non- religious (some even claim “pagan”) Halloween festival on 31 October and prepare for the more solemn  religious celebrations of Christmas in December. Ahead of all that, for the month of November, Black Ottawa Scene has prepared a delicious menu of reports and features.

” Honouring our fathers” is the theme for November and in our top story,  we profile two very special men who have touched the lives of their children and their communities in their own unique ways. We follow it with the independence day celebrations for Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria and Uganda. The Network of Black Business and Professional Women continues to impress with their immigrant women’s business expo at the Canadian Museum of Nature. On the social scene, we have the “wedding of the year” between Nana Karina Kwofie and Robert Van Andel. More on the social scene, we feature the Latin American festival parade. In our guest column, Public Health Nurse Hodan Aden reminds us in a timely article, about the need to take care of our mental health. Continuing on the health theme, we bring you frequently asked questions about the ebola epidemic, which is ravaging West Africa and has created  anxieties around the globe. Routes on Route is a new catering business featured in our business profile.  Our interviews continue with a conversation with Ted Guillaume, President of the Ottawa-based Black Canadian Scholarship Fund. Sadly, we lost two members of our community in October, nursing student Jacinta Chukwu and dress designer Felicia Ayayee, both featured in the obituaries.

Just a few tit-bits to whet your appetite but there is more in the November edition of Black Ottawa Scene. As usual we welcome your views and opinions on any of the featured articles, so keep the letters coming.

Enjoy!
